Breathtaking Conformity

Dr. Rick Fitzgibbons comments on the article “Breathtaking Conformity” found at Mercatornet.Com:

“Conformism” signifies a sheepish approach to science in which people politicize scientific findings, misinterpret those findings, and then try to change society based on false conclusions. “Conformism” is a sinister little thing precisely because the use of science for political ends too often distorts the scientific record.

Here now is our vital question: Are we justified in publicly accusing all 12 of the following professional organizations of “conformism” because of their support of same sex “marriage”, parenting, and adoption?

  • American Psychological Association
  • California Psychological Association
  • American Medical Association
  • American Psychiatric Association
  • National Association of Social Workers
  • National Association of Social Workers, CA Chapter
  • American Sociological Association
  • American Academy of Pediatrics, CA
  • American Academy of Pediatrics
  • American Psychoanalytic Association
  • American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy
  • American Anthropological Association

Let us use science to see. I refer all to Loren Marks’ Same-sex Parenting and Children’s Outcomes (Social Science Research, Volume 41, Issue 4, July 2012, Pages 735–751), a seminal literature review of the American Psychological Association’s official brief of 2005 in which this body made this claim: “Not a single study has found children of lesbian or gay parents to be disadvantaged in any significant respect relative to children of heterosexual parents” (p. 15).

Please note that this carefully executed literature review by Dr. Marks showed that not one—not one—of the 59 studies included in that brief met minimal scientific standards to be credible. Since 2005 there still has not been even one scientific paper published in a peer-reviewed journal to contradict Dr. Marks’ conclusions.

We have to ask if the 12 associations did their job as credible scientists. Are they guilty of “conformism” and if so, how can these powerful organizations regain their credibility? We all need to be aware of the “conformism” used by those attempting to redefine marriage and harm children by depriving them of their need for and right to a mother and a father. The use of misguided conclusions by these organizations is meant to try to control and confuse all of us.
